CID Interrogates Abhishek Banerjee Ahead of Elections Over Violence Allegations

Kolkata, June 16: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Member of Parliament, appeared before the CID at Bhawanipur in Kolkata on Tuesday. This questioning is part of an investigation related to alleged inflammatory remarks and threats made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of the assembly elections.

As this report was being prepared, CID officials were questioning Banerjee for nearly two hours. He arrived at the CID headquarters in Bhawanipur a few minutes before the scheduled time, signed the visitor register at the entrance, and proceeded inside for the interrogation.

This marks the third consecutive day that Banerjee has faced questioning from an investigative agency. On Monday, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials interrogated him for 11 hours regarding a multi-crore ‘school-job-for-cash’ scam in West Bengal.

Previously, on Sunday, CID officials had questioned him for eight and a half hours in connection with a case involving forged signatures of Trinamool Congress legislators. This case arose from a proposal to designate Sovandev Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, which led to discrepancies in the submitted documents and prompted the CID to initiate an investigation.

On Tuesday, the CID continued its questioning regarding allegations that Banerjee incited violence before the recent assembly elections and threatened Amit Shah. An FIR against him was filed last month at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station. Initially, the cyber crime police were investigating the matter, but the case was transferred to the CID on June 11.
