Amaravati, June 16: Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has condemned comments made by former minister Gudivada Amar Nath regarding women’s attire. This statement was directed at the state’s Home Minister, Vangalapudi Anita.
In a social media post, the Jana Sena leader expressed that commenting on women’s clothing and appearance is akin to belittling them. Kalyan emphasized that criticism should focus on policies rather than personal appearances.
Without naming Amar Nath, Kalyan described the former minister’s remarks about Home Minister Anita as offensive. He stated, “We denounce these comments. Members of that leader’s party have stooped to the level of commenting on women’s attire and looks. Caution is necessary when discussing women. Such remarks do not just target Anita; they insult all women. It is crucial to remember that civil society closely monitors every word from public figures.”
Kalyan added, “While criticism and counter-criticism are part of politics, they should be policy-focused. If there is discontent with a specific policy, the critique should be directed at that policy.”
He also advised leaders of the ruling coalition to exercise caution when responding to the former minister’s comments. Kalyan further stated, “I have a suggestion for all coalition leaders. When we respond firmly to comments from a party known for belittling even its own women, we must highlight the offensive nature of their remarks to the public. All coalition leaders should respond assertively using language that civil society appreciates. There is no need for the coalition to resort to the crude language and baseless comments used by the opposition.”
Home Minister Anita is affiliated with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which leads the coalition. TDP leaders have already reacted strongly to the comments made by the YSR Congress Party leader.
TDP state president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivas Rao described Amar Nath’s remarks as highly offensive, filled with hatred towards women, and inappropriate for democratic discourse. He demanded that Amar Nath retract his comments and apologize unconditionally to Anita and women across the state.
Srinivas remarked that political criticism is an accepted part of democracy, but personal attacks targeting a woman’s appearance, attire, or personal choices reflect a dangerous decline in political standards.
