Chinese Representative Calls for Genuine and Lasting Ceasefire in Gaza

Beijing, May 23: China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, addressed an open Security Council meeting on the Israel-Palestine conflict on May 21. He urged all parties to fully adhere to the Gaza ceasefire agreement and to achieve a genuine and lasting ceasefire in the region.

Fu Cong noted that while the ceasefire agreement reached last October has led to some improvement, the complete end to fighting and suffering remains a long and arduous journey. The international community must forge a broad consensus and take more proactive measures. Since the ceasefire agreement, Israel has reportedly conducted bombings and attacks almost daily, resulting in over 870 deaths. China calls on all parties, especially Israel, to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement and to work towards a genuine and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. Guaranteeing nations and other influential parties must take more active steps to maintain the ceasefire.

Fu Cong highlighted the severe humanitarian situation in Gaza, where there is a persistent shortage of basic necessities such as drinking water, medical supplies, and fuel, leaving many people homeless. Public health issues in Gaza must be addressed urgently. Israel, as the occupying power, must fulfill its international humanitarian obligations, lift restrictions on humanitarian supplies, and allow immediate access for essential medicines, fuel, and shelter facilities in Gaza.
