
Beijing, May 9: According to data released by China’s Ministry of Commerce on May 8, the total service trade in China for the first quarter of 2026 reached 18 trillion 22.9 billion yuan, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the same period last year.
The figures indicate that service exports reached 7 trillion 4.52 billion yuan, reflecting an 11.2% rise. In contrast, service imports totaled 11 trillion 18.38 billion yuan, showing a decrease of 2.6%. The service trade deficit stood at 4 trillion 13.86 billion yuan, which is 1 trillion 15 billion yuan lower than last year.
Knowledge-intensive service trade saw a 1.6% increase this quarter, reaching 7 trillion 93.71 billion yuan, accounting for 43.5% of total service trade. Exports in this category grew by 6.1%, amounting to 3 trillion 84.26 billion yuan, with the fastest growth rates seen in personal cultural and recreational services (25.6%) and financial services (16.1%). However, imports of knowledge-intensive services decreased by 2.3%, totaling 4 trillion 9.45 billion yuan.
Travel service exports surged by 32.3%, reaching 1 trillion 5.35 billion yuan, the highest growth among all service export categories. Meanwhile, transport service imports rose by 22.8%, amounting to 2 trillion 30.21 billion yuan, marking the fastest growth among the top five service import sectors.
