Chinas Ecological and Environmental Law Code Takes Effect

Beijing, August 16: China’s Ecological and Environmental Law Code officially came into effect on August 15. This legislation is the second to be termed a ‘Code’ following the Chinese Civil Code. It is the world’s first law specifically named the “Ecological and Environmental Law Code.”

The comprehensive law, consisting of over 160,000 words, includes 1,242 articles. It is divided into sections covering general provisions, pollution prevention and control, ecological conservation, green and low-carbon development, legal responsibilities, and supplementary provisions. This law aims not only to protect blue skies, clean water, and unpolluted land but also to safeguard the ecological and environmental rights of every individual.

Notably, the Ecological and Environmental Law Code introduces regulations for ecological restoration principles, processes, and key areas for the first time. Specific requirements have been established for ecological restoration in various landscapes, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, seas, rivers, lakes, and mining areas.

Additionally, the law clarifies the responsibilities for controlling various types of social noise and addresses issues such as light pollution for the first time.

The implementation of the Ecological and Environmental Law Code is expected to enhance the protection of China’s ecological environment and contribute to a broader green transformation of the economy and society.
