Beijing, February 23: The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics concluded grandly on Monday at the Verona Arena in Italy. China delivered an outstanding performance, securing a total of 15 medals, including 5 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze. This marks China’s best performance at a Winter Olympics held on foreign soil.
The number of medals matches the tally from the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where China also won 15 medals, including 9 gold.
Officials from the Chinese sports delegation highlighted four key aspects of this achievement: the expansion of medal-winning sports, an increase in overall strength, enhanced talent among athletes, and the emergence of young talents.
Historically, ice sports have dominated winter sports in China. However, at the Beijing Olympics, snow sports saw a significant increase in gold medals, a trend that continued in Milan.
Examining the medal details, the Chinese team excelled in snow sports, winning 4 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals. Notably, Su Yiming clinched a gold medal in snowboarding slopestyle.
In women’s freestyle skiing aerials, Shu Mengtao also won gold. Additionally, Wang Shindong topped the men’s freestyle skiing aerials, while Ku Ailing soared to gold in women’s freestyle skiing halfpipe.
In ice sports, Chinese speed skater Ning Chongyan set an Olympic record in the men’s 1,500 meters speed skating event, finishing in 1 minute 41.98 seconds to secure the only gold medal for China in ice sports.
As the Olympic flame extinguished in Milan, the Olympic flag was passed to the next host, France. For China, this is not an end but a new beginning, with eyes now set on the next Winter Olympics in the French Alps in 2030.
