China Expands Strategic Influence Amid US Distractions: Report

Beijing is leveraging the United States’ preoccupation with crises in Venezuela and Iran to strengthen its strategic influence globally. According to a report by the European Times, China is presenting itself as a “stabilizing power” through economic partnerships rather than military intervention. However, doubts remain over the credibility of this claim.

The report highlights that China’s close ties with regimes such as Venezuela’s Maduro government and Iran’s hardline leadership undermine its purported image of stability. Furthermore, China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan and Tibet contradict its non-intervention and stability narrative, prompting many countries to remain cautious and view China’s strategy as a guise for expansionism.

“While Washington grapples with simultaneous crises in Venezuela and Iran, Beijing sees an opportunity to reposition itself as a stabilizing force in global affairs. This is not mere opportunism, but part of China’s long-term strategy to reshape international order norms,” the report states.

Regarding Venezuela, the report notes that the United States’ active involvement reflects its efforts to maintain dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Meanwhile, China is expanding its influence in Latin America and the Caribbean through the China-CELAC forum by providing infrastructure and investments without political conditions.

On Iran, the report points out that the country remains critical to China’s energy security. Despite sanctions, China’s decision to continue trade presents it as a reliable partner compared to the US’s punitive policies.

The report further draws parallels between China’s current approach and historical periods when rising powers exploited US distractions to advance their positions.
