Nagoya, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : China continued its unbeaten streak in the men’s basketball competition at the 2026 Asian Games, wrapping up the group stage with a resounding victory over the Philippines. The match, held in Nagoya on September 14, saw China decisively defeat the reigning champions 105-61, confirming their place in the quarter-finals.
From the outset, China asserted its dominance, utilizing swift ball movement and fast breaks to establish a commanding lead of 36-16 by the end of the first quarter. The gap widened further in the second period, as China outscored the Philippines 30-14, heading into halftime with a robust 66-30 advantage.
Although the Philippines managed to slow down China’s offensive in the third quarter, they failed to mount a serious comeback. This victory marked China’s third consecutive win in the tournament.
Wang Junzhi led the scoring for China with 20 points and secured 14 rebounds. Liao Saining contributed 14 points, while Hu Mingxuan added 13 points. Notably, seven players from China scored in double digits, with Kui Yongxi completing a double-double, posting 10 points and 12 rebounds.
This win comes three years after China’s narrow defeat to the Philippines in the semi-finals of the 2022 Asian Games, where they lost 76-77.
Earlier in the day, Bahrain defeated Kazakhstan 101-78, finishing second in Group C with a 2-1 record. The Philippines concluded their campaign with one win and two losses, failing to qualify as one of the top two teams in their group, thus ending their title defense prematurely.
The quarter-final matches are set to take place on September 16 at the Aichi International Arena. China will face Saudi Arabia, while South Korea will go up against Jordan. Iran will compete against Bahrain, and host nation Japan will take on Chinese Taipei.
