Steve Smith Questions Participation in 2027 Ashes, Eyes 2028 Olympics

Malahide, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Australian cricket star Steve Smith has cast doubt on his participation in the 2027 Ashes series, set to take place in England. The seasoned batsman indicated that he is currently focused on his Test career, evaluating his future series by series, while also eyeing a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

At 37 years old, Smith is playing for the Amsterdam Flames in the European T20 Premier League. In his illustrious Test career, he has played 125 matches and scored 37 centuries. He currently ranks second among male Test batsmen, following England’s Harry Brook.

In an interview with *The Telegraph*, Smith stated, “I don’t even know if I’ll be there. I’m thinking series by series, as I have been for some time, and that date feels quite far away. I would love to win there or have already won, but let’s see if that happens. Right now, the Olympics is the target I’m trying to be part of. One reason I’m playing in Amsterdam is to continue playing as much T20 cricket as possible.”

While Smith has not set a retirement date, he acknowledged that his remaining playing time will likely lean towards franchise T20 cricket.

He reflected, “I still feel I can play T20 cricket for a while longer. What happens after that? I’m not sure, but I hope to have some time left to play. I’ve achieved a lot in this sport. The journey over the last 15 years has been incredible. I’m enjoying it, so I don’t have a final date; we’ll wait and see, but it’s been a great journey.”

The Australian team is set to tour South Africa in October for a three-match Test series. This will be Smith’s first Test tour to South Africa since the ball-tampering scandal that led to a 12-month ban from international cricket.

Smith remarked, “For me, it’s just another series. That was a long time ago, and we’ve played a lot of cricket since then. We also went to South Africa for ODI matches after that. Right now, South Africa is a strong team; they defeated us in the World Test Championship final. They have a very good pace attack, so this series should be exciting.”
