Mumbai, March 22: Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram is set to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday, just one day before the nomination deadline in Puducherry. This meeting represents a crucial last-ditch effort to maintain the DMK-Congress alliance.
As the April 9 assembly elections approach, uncertainty over seat sharing has escalated. Despite multiple rounds of discussions, an agreement on seat allocation remains elusive.
According to sources, the Congress party aims to contest 17 of the 30 assembly seats and has informally proposed allocating 11 seats to the DMK, while offering one seat each to VCK and CPI.
However, the DMK is advocating for a more balanced formula and reportedly seeks an equal distribution of seats, leading to the current stalemate. Efforts to resolve the issue on Saturday were unsuccessful.
A DMK delegation, led by MP Jagatrakshakan, waited for several hours at a private hotel for Congress representatives to arrive for discussions. After nearly 12 hours of waiting without any sign of the Congress team, DMK leaders returned to Chennai.
Jagatrakshakan later stated that the DMK still has an interest in continuing its alliance with Congress in Puducherry. However, parallel developments suggest that the communication gap between the two parties is widening.
Reports indicate that a separate meeting led by Congress official Girish Chodankar did not include DMK representatives. With time running out, DMK leadership is now considering its options. Jagatrakshakan is expected to update Chief Minister Stalin on the latest developments, including whether to make a final attempt at an agreement with Congress or explore alternative alliances.
