Ambikapur, March 21: Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai inaugurated the three-day Surguja Olympic 2026 at the PG College Ground in Ambikapur on Saturday. Athletes from Surguja, Surajpur, Korea, Balrampur, Jashpur, and MCB districts participated in a parade to honor the event. The Chief Minister lit the Olympic torch to mark the occasion. International women’s wrestler Geeta Phogat also attended the ceremony.
During the event, Chief Minister Sai emphasized that the Bastar region has faced significant challenges due to Naxalism for the past 40 years, hindering its development. He stated that efforts are underway to eradicate Naxalism, fulfilling the commitment of Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah. The Bastar Olympic was organized to connect local youth with the mainstream development agenda.
He noted that participants in the Bastar Olympic included individuals who have renounced Naxalism, with 700 surrendered athletes joining the Surguja Olympic. The Chief Minister expressed pride in launching the Surguja Olympic with Gajru as its mascot. Over 349,000 registrations have been received for this event.
The Surguja Olympic will feature 12 sports, including kho-kho, kabaddi, volleyball, and football. The Chief Minister congratulated all athletes and assured that the Surguja Olympic will continue to be held in the future.
Notably, Surguja MP Chintamani Maharaj, local ministers, and a large number of athletes and citizens were present at the event. The Surguja Olympic is a significant grassroots sports festival organized by the Chhattisgarh state government, aimed at identifying and promoting hidden sports talent in the tribal-dominated areas of the Surguja division, while providing a platform for youth, especially those from rural and tribal backgrounds.
