Indian Army Completes Basic Drone Training, Infantry Soldiers to Become Drone Warriors by 2027

New Delhi, March 21: Drones have emerged as one of the most lethal weapons in modern warfare. Whether in the Russia-Ukraine conflict or the tensions between Iran and Israel, drones have played a crucial role. India’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan is a vivid example of drone warfare, showcasing the effective use of drones by the Indian Army, which even shot down Pakistani drones during the operation.

The Indian Army has been preparing for this new combat tool. The process to develop ‘Drone Warriors’ has rapidly progressed, with the first phase now completed. According to defense officials, the Army has finished basic drone training. This means that every soldier in the infantry battalion has received foundational knowledge and operational training on drones.

Basic training for drones was initiated at the unit level. The second phase, which involves specialized advanced training, is currently underway. Special drone training nodes have been established, and their numbers are continuously increasing. Additionally, the procurement and deployment of drones and counter-drone systems are being expedited.

The Army has established a drone platoon in every infantry battalion, named the ‘Ashni Platoon.’ So far, these platoons have been operational in 380 infantry battalions, equipped with various types of drones.

Moreover, a Drone Center Training Academy is being established. Facilities have already been set up at the IMA in Dehradun, the Infantry School in Mhow, and the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. Both soldiers and unit officers are being trained to operate drones.

This drone initiative by the Indian Army has been named ‘Eagle in the Arm.’ Its primary objective is for every soldier to learn how to operate drones. Just as soldiers handle their weapons and keep them close, they should also be able to effectively utilize drones.

According to defense officials, training is being tailored based on the role of the unit or soldier. Soldiers are being trained for various applications, including combat, surveillance, logistics, and even medical evacuation. The capability to neutralize enemy drones is also being developed.

This initiative aims to create a multi-layered system capable of utilizing and neutralizing unmanned platforms. The Army’s goal is for 100 percent of infantry unit soldiers to be proficient in drone operations by 2027.
