Chhattisgarh Jail Inmate Commits Suicide, Sparks Investigation

Raipur, June 9: A shocking incident has emerged from the Khowkhra district jail in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district. An inmate, Duvasa Kevat, who was in judicial custody for a rape case, has reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself within the jail premises. This incident has caused a stir among jail authorities and the police, who have launched an investigation.

According to reports, Duvasa Kevat was arrested on June 8 for the abduction and rape of a minor girl in the Baloda police jurisdiction. He was subsequently sent to judicial custody at the Khowkhra district jail. On Tuesday, his body was discovered hanging from a cloth in the jail’s bathroom. Upon receiving the news, police and administrative officials rushed to the scene to initiate an investigation.

It is reported that a minor girl had gone missing from her home on March 5, 2026. Following a complaint from her family, the Baloda police registered a case against an unidentified individual for allegedly luring and abducting the minor. Utilizing cyber technology and other resources, the police managed to locate the girl in Korba district. During the investigation, Duvasa Kevat was taken into custody, where he confessed to luring the minor and committing the act of rape. He was then arrested and presented in court, which ordered his judicial remand.

As of now, the reasons behind the suicide remain unclear. The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. This incident has raised several questions regarding safety and oversight within the jail, prompting an ongoing investigation by both the police and jail administration.

City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Yogita Bali Khaparde confirmed that Duvasa Kevat, aged 21, was incarcerated for the abduction and rape of the minor girl. He hanged himself in the bathroom early this morning. Authorities are conducting inquiries, and the cause of the suicide will be determined following the investigation.
