Mumbai, July 29: Congress MLA Amin Patel has addressed a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, highlighting delays in the process of minor amendments to birth and death certificates. He raised concerns over various critical issues, including the Special Intensive Review (SIR), statements by MP Kangana Ranaut regarding Gen Z, and the CBI’s charge sheet in the NEET paper leak case, questioning the operational efficiency of both the central and state governments.
Patel emphasized two main issues in his communication to the Chief Minister and BMC Commissioner. The first pertains to the delays in correcting minor errors in birth and death certificates. He noted that rectifying small mistakes, such as names or spellings, is taking several months, causing significant difficulties for students seeking admission to schools, colleges, and universities.
He mentioned that he previously held meetings with BMC officials, but progress has been slow. Therefore, he suggested in his letter that parents who have applied for corrections should be allowed to enroll their children immediately by submitting an affidavit. Once the BMC issues the revised certificates, they can be submitted to the respective educational institutions. It is crucial that students are not deprived of education due to pending corrections in their certificates. Both the government and the BMC must address this issue promptly.
Regarding the questions raised about the SIR, Patel pointed out that many buildings in Mumbai and Maharashtra are undergoing redevelopment. Residents of these buildings are temporarily relocated, yet the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are not accepting their forms due to a lack of clear instructions. He has written to the Chief Election Commissioner, Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker, Municipal Commissioner, and District Collector, and has held meetings to advocate for the inclusion of individuals listed in the 2002 and 2024 voter rolls in the SIR.
Patel has requested an extension of the SIR deadline from August 8 to August 30. Given the ongoing rains, disruptions in the city, youth movements, and the pilgrimage of the Warkari community, people should be granted sufficient time.
In response to BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s comments regarding Gen Z, Patel expressed strong disapproval. He stated that the mental health of individuals making such statements should be evaluated, and their party should take this matter seriously. The youth of the country is already distressed by incidents like paper leaks and feels insecure about their future. Making derogatory comments towards young people during such times is deeply unfortunate.
On the CBI’s charge sheet regarding the paper leak case, Patel remarked that effective punishment has not been meted out to those responsible for previous paper leak incidents. In many cases, arrests have been delayed, and accused individuals have subsequently been granted bail. While the government is announcing new laws and measures, historical records indicate that it has failed to ensure stringent action against those involved in paper leak cases.
He urged that all cases related to student movements across the country should be withdrawn. Governments in states where actions have been taken against students should apologize and ensure that justice is served. If the government possesses concrete evidence of any anti-national activities, strict action should be taken against those involved.
