New Delhi, May 22: Central Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, sharply criticized the Karnataka government on Friday for its decision to withdraw 52 criminal cases related to protests and riots. He alleged that this move was aimed at appeasing ‘rioters’ under the guise of protecting Kannada activists.
In a statement, Joshi accused the state government of sacrificing the Constitution and the rule of law for the sake of appeasement politics. He claimed that the Karnataka government was using Kannada activists as a pretext to facilitate the release of communal rioters. In the name of appeasement, it was sacrificing the Constitution and the legal framework of the country.
Joshi asserted that the decision to withdraw cases was motivated more by the interests of ‘Muslim rioters’ than by concerns for Kannada activists. He condemned the withdrawal of cases against over 100 accused in the Aland communal riots, calling it extremely reprehensible.
He accused the Congress government of crossing all limits of appeasement politics by withdrawing criminal cases against a group accused of inciting communal unrest and attacking police officers with lethal weapons.
According to Joshi, during the violence, an agitated group of Muslim youths allegedly raised religious slogans and attacked police personnel, resulting in serious injuries to a Deputy Superintendent of Police and a constable.
Despite this, he noted, the government has released communal rioters under the pretext of withdrawing cases against Kannada activists. This reflects the pinnacle of appeasement politics, he stated.
The central minister further alleged that under the Congress government, law enforcement personnel are no longer safe. He expressed that it seems the government is honoring rioters by releasing them, which is truly unfortunate.
Joshi also accused the government of attempting to mislead the public by conflating farmers’ protests with cases related to Kannada activists and communal riots.
