Central Government Issues Notice to Kerala Waqf Board Amid Munambam Land Dispute

Thiruvananthapuram, June 15: In response to opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Ministry of Minority Affairs has issued a notice to the Kerala Waqf Board regarding the Munambam land dispute. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the BJP’s Kerala unit president and legislator, submitted a detailed complaint to Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

Chandrasekhar’s complaint highlighted that the Kerala Waqf Board unilaterally registered approximately 404 acres of land on the ‘Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development’ (UMMEED) portal. He urged the central minister to intervene in the matter.

In his complaint, Chandrasekhar argued that only the concerned mutawalli is authorized to upload land information on the UMMEED portal. He alleged that the direct registration of properties by the Waqf Board was illegal and beyond its jurisdiction.

Currently, the central government has intervened and sought clarification from the Kerala Waqf Board on this issue.

BJP leaders have described this action as evidence that the central government is taking the concerns raised by Munambam residents and various organizations seriously.

The BJP maintains that it has always prioritized the property rights and livelihoods of Munambam residents. Chandrasekhar previously stated that including disputed lands on the UMMEED portal unilaterally is a serious legal issue, especially when ownership matters are pending in various legal forums.

He further noted that similar complaints regarding Waqf land issues have emerged not only in Munambam but also in other parts of the state, including Taliparamba, and the party will continue to demand necessary intervention.

Chandrasekhar reiterated the BJP’s commitment to protecting the interests of original landowners and ensuring strong legal and administrative actions to prevent illegal activities.

He emphasized that the central government’s intervention is a significant step in the fight for justice for Munambam residents. He stated that the party will remain at the forefront of efforts to uncover the truth in similar disputes across the state and protect people’s rights.
