New Delhi, July 1: The nation marks the 11th anniversary of the ‘Digital India’ initiative, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-standing vision for technology and innovation. According to the Modi Archive, the concept of digital governance was championed by Modi nearly two decades before the national launch of ‘Digital India’ in 2015. He believed that technology should empower the most marginalized individuals in society, rather than serve as a luxury for a select few.
The Modi Archive shared rare video clips of speeches from 2003 onwards on social media. These include his address at Nirma University in 2003 and his speech at the e-India ICT Conference in 2011, where he described e-governance as “effective, simple, and affordable.”
The post stated, “Long before the launch of the Digital India mission on July 1, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi viewed technology as a powerful means of empowerment for the lowest strata of society, rather than a luxury for a few.”
The archive also showcases Modi’s consistent emphasis on citizen empowerment and mobile governance through technology over the past two decades. Highlights include the launch of the Digital India campaign on July 1, 2015, and his address in Silicon Valley that same year.
According to the Modi Archive, during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi’s focus on information technology laid a strong foundation for the expansion of digital infrastructure and the comprehensive digitization of government services across the country.
The archive noted, “The roots of India’s unprecedented digital transformation date back over two decades. As we celebrate 11 years of Digital India, we see how the digital framework established years ago has laid the groundwork for future governance.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi also extended his wishes to citizens on social media for the 11th anniversary of Digital India. He stated that this initiative has given India a new global identity and symbolizes the resolve of Indians to embrace innovation and technology.
He remarked, “Digital India is a strong foundation for a developed and self-reliant India. Over the past 11 years, this initiative has played a crucial role in empowering the poor and marginalized, while also making life easier for citizens.”
Modi further emphasized, “When over a billion people adopt technology, the impact is transformative.” He noted that the Digital India initiative has provided new direction to governance, empowered citizens, and accelerated overall development, successfully influencing every aspect of people’s lives.
He highlighted the significant role of technology in promoting ‘ease of living’ through seamless digital payment systems, transparent assistance delivery via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), and the continuous expansion of digital public infrastructure.
According to the Prime Minister, Digital India has brought a new wave of innovation to the country’s villages and Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Today, young entrepreneurs, startups, and innovators from every corner of the nation are developing solutions to major global challenges.
