Kolkata, April 29: Voting is underway for 142 assembly seats in the second phase of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal monitored the situation at polling centers through CCTV and issued necessary directives to the relevant authorities.
During a press briefing, Agarwal emphasized, “The Election Commission of India wants everyone whose name is on the voter list to participate in the voting process. The first phase demonstrated that a turnout of up to 93 percent is achievable.”
Agarwal assured that everything is proceeding peacefully, stating, “There have been no major incidents. We are addressing any issues that arise promptly.”
In response to allegations from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Agarwal said, “If anyone is engaging in misconduct, please provide us with their names. The Election Commission will not spare anyone. We are identifying issues through CCTV cameras, and we resolve them as soon as we receive information.”
Banerjee accused the BJP and the Election Commission of obstructing the voting process and acting at the BJP’s behest to ensure their victory.
Meanwhile, reports of violence and clashes between rival political party supporters have emerged in various districts due to the assembly elections, with South 24 Parganas becoming a focal point of unrest.
Tension escalated in the Saihati area of the Bhangar assembly constituency when Trinamool Congress workers protested against Mohammad Naushad Siddiqui, the current legislator and candidate from the All India Secular Front (AISF), who arrived at a polling center.
Upon seeing Siddiqui, supporters of the ruling party began chanting slogans, intensifying the situation. Siddiqui and his associates claimed that while voting had been peaceful earlier in the day, Trinamool Congress workers later attempted to create disturbances and disrupt the voting process.
Central forces quickly arrived at the scene to separate the rival factions and brought the situation under control. In Basanti, BJP candidate Vikas Sardar was reportedly attacked, and his vehicle was vandalized by Trinamool Congress workers.
