Bhubaneswar, September 2: The Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Vijaya Kishor Rahatkar, condemned the gang rape of a minor girl on a moving bus in the Delhi NCR region. She emphasized the urgent need for a shift in societal attitudes.
“This is a tragic incident, and I strongly condemn what happened to the girl,” Rahatkar stated. “Merely saying that it is unacceptable is not enough. The accused must receive the harshest punishment possible. I believe the police are working on this case, and we should give them some time. However, the accused should face immediate and severe consequences to deter anyone from committing such acts in the future. We are monitoring the police’s actions closely.”
Rahatkar also highlighted the government’s significant responsibility in maintaining law and order. “The proper functioning of society relies heavily on law enforcement, and the government has systems in place for this. However, there must also be a substantial change in societal thinking. When such issues arise, if society continues to function incorrectly and relies entirely on the legal and administrative systems, how can conditions improve? We need to work on both fronts simultaneously. Whenever a serious incident occurs or wrongdoing happens, there should be strong social pressure against such individuals. People must understand that if they engage in wrongdoing, society will not support them. If we want to prevent such cases, this kind of social pressure is essential. I believe collective efforts are necessary on this issue.”
According to the police, a driver and conductor in Greater Noida gang-raped a 16-year-old girl inside an empty bus. Both accused individuals have been arrested.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 4 near Pari Chowk. The victim alleged in her complaint that both men sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her if she resisted. They later abandoned her near Kashmiri Gate in Delhi. The accused have been identified as driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep.
The victim, a resident of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, left home without informing her family after being scolded by her mother regarding her studies. She was en route to Sector 63 in Noida, where her cousin resides, when the assault occurred.
