CBI Withdraws Closure Report Against Former IPS Officer Amod Kanth in Uphaar Cinema Fire Case

New Delhi, June 1: In a significant development related to the Uphaar Cinema fire case of 1997, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has retracted its closure report against former IPS officer Amod Kanth. Following this decision, the CBI submitted a detailed status report to the Rouse Avenue Court concerning the case.

The CBI’s status report indicates that a petition has been filed by the Uphaar Victims Association in the Delhi High Court. The petition requests the central government and the CBI to present documents related to prosecution approval before the court and to reconsider the entire matter. It also highlights that several critical aspects of the investigation and prosecution process have been overlooked.

The CBI informed the court that the Delhi High Court had previously suspended hearings on this petition, filed on June 29, 2019, indefinitely. However, in a recent order dated April 23, the High Court directed the CBI to file a status report regarding the case. In compliance with this order, the agency has presented its report to the court.

Additionally, the CBI noted that the next hearing in this matter is scheduled for July 6 in the Delhi High Court, where further legal clarity is expected.

Previously, the CBI had filed a closure report in 2009 concerning another case involving Amod Kanth, which was also met with opposition, raising questions about the investigation process from various parties.

The Uphaar fire incident is regarded as one of the most serious industrial disasters in the country and has been undergoing various phases of judicial and investigative processes for a long time. This recent development has once again brought the case into the spotlight, with all eyes on the forthcoming legal proceedings.
