Mumbai, May 13: The investigation into the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case accelerated on Wednesday as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained three suspects from Ahilyanagar and one woman from Pune for questioning. The agency is pursuing further inquiries into the matter.
Officials reported that the three suspects are currently being interrogated at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Ahilyanagar. Sources suggest that one of the individuals being questioned may be the accused, Dhananjay Lokhande.
A CBI team from Mumbai has been stationed in Ahilyanagar since Tuesday as part of the nationwide investigation into the exam paper leak. Investigators are also examining the potential involvement of several other individuals who have come under the agency’s scrutiny during the probe.
The purpose of this questioning is to determine the actual role of the three suspects in allegedly disseminating and distributing the leaked NEET exam papers.
This CBI action in Ahilyanagar follows revelations made by Shubham Khairnar, who was previously arrested in Nashik in connection with the case. Khairnar is suspected of playing a crucial role in obtaining the leaked papers and distributing them across various states.
Meanwhile, Pune police confirmed that a woman was also detained in this case and subsequently handed over to the CBI for further investigation. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that the woman was apprehended in the Bibvewadi area of Pune. He added, “We interrogated her and handed her over to the CBI for further investigation.”
However, the police commissioner declined to provide additional details regarding the woman’s actual role in the alleged paper leak network.
These recent developments come amid the escalating investigation into the NEET-UG 2026 controversy, which led to the cancellation of the exam for over 2.2 million students nationwide on May 3 due to allegations that the question paper was leaked before the exam commenced.
The CBI is now investigating a larger network allegedly involved in the leak, which includes suspected intermediaries, distributors, and beneficiaries spread across several states.
In the meantime, Mumbai’s Killa Court has granted Khairnar a two-day CBI transit remand. The investigation agency is set to present him in a Delhi court on Thursday.
