Guwahati, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a case against Sajal Kanti Das, a retired deputy chief engineer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known income. The case was registered by the CBI’s Guwahati branch on September 21, 2026.
The agency claims that between 2016 and 2022, Das and his wife, Sangita Das, accumulated assets worth approximately ₹88.20 lakh, which far exceed their declared income sources. According to the CBI, their total assets rose from about ₹39.85 lakh in 2016 to ₹1,28,66,946 by 2022. This significant increase in wealth has formed the basis for the allegations of disproportionate assets.
The investigation revealed multiple properties and financial holdings linked to the couple in Assam’s Cachar district. Among the properties under scrutiny is a house in the Rangpur area, valued at nearly ₹19 lakh, built on five kathas of land. The agency also noted that large parcels of land in the Udharbond and Lakhipur areas were registered in Sangita Das’s name.
Additionally, the CBI identified a commercial property in the Club Road area of Silchar, registered under Sangita Das, valued at around ₹34 lakh. A flat worth over ₹20 lakh was reportedly registered in Sajal Kanti Das’s name on the same street.
During the investigation, the agency uncovered various bank accounts, fixed deposits, and term deposits associated with the retired engineer and his wife, which contained several lakh rupees. Sajal Kanti Das previously served as a deputy chief engineer with the NFR in Jiribam. This case revolves around the couple’s alleged accumulation of wealth beyond their known income sources during their tenure.
With the case now filed, the CBI has formally begun its investigation into the accusations of unaccounted wealth. Future actions will depend on the investigation’s findings and the verification of the financial records and properties linked to the accused.
