Ghaziabad, December 9 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took significant action in a major corruption case by arresting a senior passport superintendent from the regional passport office. The officer was arrested on the night of December 8 after the agency found him attempting to influence witnesses and deliberately misleading the investigation. The accused, Deepak Chandra, is currently posted at the Mumbai regional passport office.

The CBI had registered a case against the accused on March 24 for possessing assets disproportionate to his income. It is alleged that, despite being a government employee, he owned assets worth ₹85,06,900 between July 30, 2018, and September 30, 2024, which is 146.43% more than his declared income. Due to this disproportionate ratio, the agency initiated the investigation.

During the probe, the CBI team conducted a search of the accused’s residential premises. The search recovered unaccounted cash amounting to nearly ₹60 lakh, documents related to investments in immovable properties, and records of large expenditures. These findings have further strengthened the allegations against him.

On the CBI’s application, the Special Court for Anti-Corruption Cases in Ghaziabad issued an interim order on September 17, 2025, to attach two properties of the accused — a residential flat and a commercial shop. This order aimed to preserve evidence during the ongoing investigation.

After his arrest on Monday, the accused was produced before the CBI court in Ghaziabad on Tuesday. Considering the seriousness of the case and the ongoing probe, the court remanded him to police custody until December 12.

The CBI stated that the investigation is still underway and further evidence and financial transactions will be examined.
