New Delhi, March 15: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a prominent recruiter linked to a ‘scam compound’ operating abroad. The accused, Krishna Kumar Lakhwani from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was involved in recruiting Indian citizens for organized cyber fraud centers based in Cambodia. This arrest is considered a significant step towards dismantling an international network that exploits Indians as cyber slaves.
According to the CBI, organized crime syndicates have established large ‘scam compounds’ in various foreign countries, particularly Cambodia. These centers primarily target Indian citizens with schemes involving digital arrest scams, identity theft, online fraud, and other cyber crimes. Young Indians are lured with promises of data entry, customer support, or high-paying jobs and are transported from Delhi or other cities through various routes.
Upon arrival in Cambodia, victims have their passports confiscated, are held captive, subjected to physical and mental torture, and coerced into participating in cyber crimes through threats. These victims are referred to as ‘cyber slaves.’ They are forced to make fraudulent calls, send messages, and execute scams, defrauding millions from individuals worldwide, primarily in India.
Investigations revealed that Krishna Kumar Lakhwani was a key player in this syndicate. He charged candidates between $300 to $400 (approximately ₹25,000 to ₹33,000) and arranged their travel via Delhi. Upon reaching Cambodia, they were pressured to engage in scams.
The CBI tracked the accused based on surveillance and intelligence. He was apprehended upon returning to India and brought to the CBI office. During questioning, investigators found significant evidence on his mobile phone, including videos of him interviewing candidates for the scam compound and images of several Indian passports of those he had recruited.
The CBI stated that this syndicate trafficked naive youths under the guise of fake job offers. Once abroad, these individuals were illegally detained and forced into cyber crime. Investigations have revealed that Lakhwani ensnared dozens of Indians in this trap.
The accused has been arrested and placed in judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to identify other individuals involved, trafficking routes, and additional members of the syndicate.
