Mumbai, August 15: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Masad Sheikh, a proclaimed offender, in connection with the murder of Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh. The arrest took place on Friday in the Wari Bandar area of Mumbai’s Dongri district, according to an official statement.
Masad Sheikh had been on the run since an FIR was registered against him in 2022 and had not cooperated with the investigation or trial. The CBI apprehended him based on human intelligence and technical inputs.
Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the FIR registered at the Rampurhat police station on April 8, 2022, concerning the incident that occurred on March 22, 2022. Bhadu Sheikh was murdered on March 21, 2022, in Bogtui, Birbhum district, West Bengal.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed charges against Masad Sheikh and eight other accused in 2022 and 2023 at the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Rampurhat, Birbhum. The case has since been transferred to the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal.
The CBI stated that the accused will be brought from Mumbai to Kolkata to be presented in the competent court.
In a separate development, a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court refused to hear the petition of Tulu Mandal, a fugitive stone quarry owner from Birbhum district. Mandal challenged a ‘hulia’ (court notice detailing a fugitive suspect) issued against him by a district court in Birbhum.
Mandal is under scrutiny by both the Birbhum district police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). This follows the recent recovery of ₹28 crore in cash and approximately ₹22 crore worth of gold from the home of his close relative, Minar Mandal.
During questioning, Minar admitted that the cash and gold recovered from his home belonged to Tulu and that he was merely tasked with holding onto them.
Since Tulu has been on the run, the police obtained a ‘hulia’ from the Birbhum district court last week and subsequently issued a Red Corner Notice against him.
