Casio has introduced upgrades to several popular G-Shock digital watch models by replacing the traditional EL backlights with more energy-efficient LED lighting. This update affects long-standing series such as the GW-6900, GW-2310, DW-5900, and GX-56, which retain their classic designs and features while benefiting from enhanced brightness and longer battery life.
The GW-6900U-1JF leads this refresh, maintaining key features like 200-meter water resistance, shock resistance, Tough Solar charging, and Multi-Band 6 time synchronization. It now incorporates Casio’s 3547 module with an LED backlight that replaces the 2009 model’s EL system, extending the no-charge operation period up to 10 months.
The GW-2310 series has also been updated with the GW-2310U-1JF and GW-2310UFB-1JF models. Both include stainless steel bezels and core functions such as world time, stopwatch, and automatic calendar. Equipped with the 3537 module, they feature high-brightness LED backlighting. The UFB variant offers an inverted LCD display for a more discreet look.
The DW-5900U-1JF and DW-5900UBB-1JF models receive the LED upgrade as well. Preserving the original 1992 DW-5900’s Triple Graph display, these watches now use the 3536 module and provide a battery life of up to 10 years, doubling that of previous versions. The design remains true to the classic layout with animated counters and status icons.
Additionally, the GX-56 line has been refreshed with the GX-56UBB-1JF model. This large, durable watch now features an LED backlight through the updated 3545 module while continuing to support Tough Solar charging and 200-meter water resistance.
In terms of pricing, the DW-5900U-1JF and DW-5900UBB-1JF are priced at 14,300 yen (around $100). The GW-2310U-1JF and GW-2310UFB-1JF are available for 22,000 yen (approximately $154). The GX-56UBB-1JF is listed at 23,100 yen (about $161), and the GW-6900U-1JF costs 24,200 yen (roughly $169).
All updated models will go on sale in Japan this month and are expected to be released worldwide in the coming weeks. Casio will continue offering the versions with EL backlights alongside these new LED-backlit models.
