Captivating Fusion of Kathak and Haka Dances Enchants Auckland Audience

Auckland, July 11: A special event honoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased the mesmerizing performances of New Zealand‘s traditional Haka dance and India’s classical Kathak dance. The gala lunch featured expressive displays from diverse cultures, captivating all attendees.

The traditional Haka dance, originating from New Zealand’s indigenous Māori tribe, is renowned for its energy, strength, and dynamic presentation. In contrast, the Indian classical dance form, Kathak, added rhythm, expression, and beauty, enhancing the cultural significance of the event.

This beautiful presentation from two distinct cultures symbolized unity, mutual respect, and the strong ties between India and New Zealand. The fusion of both nations’ cultural heritages provided a memorable experience for the audience.

PM Modi received a formal welcome at Auckland’s Government House, complete with traditional Māori customs. He was also honored with a ‘Guard of Honor’ during this special occasion.

This grand reception reflects the strengthening bilateral relations, mutual respect, and deep friendship between India and New Zealand. The event began with a powerful Māori dance known as Powhiri.

The Powhiri process consists of several stages. In one stage, Māori warriors approach the guests with traditional weapons and place a token on the ground. If the guest picks it up, it signifies that they come in peace. When this challenge was presented to PM Modi, he accepted it with great respect.

Additionally, the Indian community organized the ‘Kia Ora Modi‘ event, which draws from the Māori language. The phrase has several positive meanings, one of which is “PM Modi, you are welcome.” It has now become an essential part of New Zealand’s English vernacular, used similarly to “hello” or “hi.” PM Modi addressed the Indian community with “Kia Ora,” prompting a thunderous applause from the audience.
