Kolkata, April 19: In a thrilling encounter of IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) showcased an impressive performance, defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by four wickets. This victory, secured at Eden Gardens on Sunday, marked KKR’s first win of the season, leaving captain Ajinkya Rahane visibly pleased.
Following the match, Rahane expressed his happiness, stating, “It feels great to be here. I am really happy. There were a lot of emotions during the match. I am particularly pleased for Rinku, Anukul, and Varun. Varun bowled exceptionally well, and Anukul had a fantastic domestic tournament. We have communicated a lot during our practice sessions. It’s all about understanding the situation well.”
He added, “This win will boost our confidence. The bowlers are developing good synergy. However, we still need to improve in batting. Kartik Tyagi has performed remarkably well. He has been clear about what he needs to do on the field since our practice matches. He is young, but his confidence is incredible. It’s great to see that confidence growing in him as a fast bowler. There’s still much to learn.”
Despite the victory, Rahane acknowledged the need for improvement in the batting department. He noted, “Our powerplay in the last three matches hasn’t been good. Sometimes, I feel the strike rate is given too much importance. We saw what happened in this match. As a batting unit, we need to learn quickly. Now we have those extra five or six days. The atmosphere in our dressing room is fantastic. The fans have been amazing from the start. The last five matches were really tough for us. This win is for the fans. They have been wonderful and very positive, providing us with great energy.”
Varun Chakravarthy delivered a stellar bowling performance, conceding just 14 runs in his four overs while taking three crucial wickets. Kartik Tyagi also looked in great rhythm, claiming three wickets for 22 runs. Chasing a target of 156 runs, KKR found themselves in a precarious position at 85 for 6.
However, Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy forged a crucial partnership for the seventh wicket, scoring 76 runs off 37 balls, leading the team to their first victory of the season. Rinku scored an unbeaten 53 runs off 34 balls, including five fours and two sixes, while Anukul contributed 29 runs off 16 balls to secure the win.
