New Delhi, April 19: Rashid Khan has revealed that he turned down citizenship offers from both India and Australia. The star leg-spinner disclosed this in his book, “Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom.”
In his book, Rashid recounts an incident from the 2023 IPL season. A team official informed him that a prominent figure in Indian cricket wanted to meet him. Rashid vividly remembers the conversation.
He stated, “I approached them and greeted them. Our conversation began, and they said, ‘The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come to India and stay here. We will provide you with Indian documents. You can live here and play cricket.’ I was taken aback by their words and didn’t know how to respond, but I smiled and said, ‘Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan.’”
Rashid also mentioned that he received similar proposals from more than one country. He wrote, “I received offers for citizenship and playing from both Australia and India, but I told them, ‘If I don’t play for my country, I won’t play for any other country either.’”
The 25-year-old recalled a similar incident from 2018 when he was with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Following a match-winning performance against Kolkata Knight Riders, there was a demand on social media in India for him to be granted citizenship, reflecting the immense respect he commands among fans.
Rashid shared a special moment off the field as well. He announced the birth of his son through an emotional social media post, naming the newborn Azlan Khan. Along with the announcement, he shared a heartwarming picture of his son and a wooden plaque that read, “Hello world, my name is Azlan Khan.”
