Shefali Verma Promises Strong Comeback After Loss in Durban

Mumbai, April 19: The Indian women’s cricket team faced a setback on Sunday, losing the second T20 match against South Africa at Kingsmead by 8 wickets. Opener Shefali Verma, who returned to the pavilion after scoring 57 runs, expressed regret over her dismissal due to a poor shot selection. However, she assured that the visiting team would bounce back strongly in the upcoming matches.

Shefali played a commendable innings of 57 runs off 38 balls, hitting 2 sixes and 7 fours. Unfortunately, the middle-order collapse left the Indian team restricted to just 147 runs. In response, South Africa chased down the target in 17.1 overs with 8 wickets remaining.

In the post-match press conference, Shefali stated, “I got off to a great start. I was focused on playing grounded shots, taking singles, and capitalizing on any loose deliveries for big shots. I looked at the scoreboard and thought I could clear the cover, but that shot didn’t connect well, and I got out. Perhaps if I had stayed at the crease until the 18th over, I could have scored more runs. I should have remained calm.”

The Indian team now trails 0-2 in the five-match series. The two teams will face off again on April 22, 25, and 27 for the final three matches. Shefali emphasized that the team’s true strength lies in their collective resolve to recover. She added, “Yes, absolutely, it’s not a big deal. We all know our strengths. We will come back stronger, stand shoulder to shoulder, and practice even harder. We have a two-day break, and we will regroup, perform well, and return with even more strength.”

This match also marked a personal milestone for Shefali, as she became the youngest Indian cricketer to play 100 T20 international matches at just 22 years old. Acknowledging this achievement, she credited the South African team for their outstanding performance.

Shefali concluded, “Playing 100 matches for India is a matter of great pride for me. As for their team, they batted exceptionally well and have performed admirably across all three formats. So, I would say we will come back stronger and give our best in the third match.”
