New Delhi, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Leaders from India are expressing strong objections to a map released by the United Nations, which they claim misrepresents the country’s borders. Fahad Ahmed, a leader from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), emphasized that they do not recognize this map, stating, “We will determine our borders, not the UN.”
Former CPI(M) MP Hannan Mollah echoed these sentiments, highlighting that errors in maps can occur every decade. He urged the Indian government to identify and correct these inaccuracies. “If there are mistakes, we must point them out and seek corrections,” Mollah stated.
The issue gained further attention when Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting intervention regarding the alleged profiling of Bengali-speaking migrant workers. Mollah commented on this, saying, “There is anger behind these words. Bengali people are facing attacks everywhere. In every state, they are being labeled as Bangladeshis and harassed.”
Mollah reiterated the importance of addressing the UN map issue, asserting that it is the responsibility of the Indian government to highlight and rectify any inaccuracies. He noted that corrections can be made once the errors are pointed out.
In a related development, Ahmed criticized the demand from the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal to ban Muslims from participating in Garba events, questioning the organization’s commitment to social welfare. “Have they ever provided meals to the poor or treated patients in hospitals? They only comment on festivals, regardless of whether they are Hindu or Muslim,” he remarked.
On the topic of actress Swara Bhasker’s recent comments regarding the practice of ‘Jauhar,’ Mollah defended her, stating that her words had been misrepresented. He emphasized that the portrayal of historical traumas should be approached with sensitivity, rather than being sensationalized.
As discussions continue, these political leaders are calling for a more nuanced understanding of national identity and representation on international platforms.
