New Delhi, July 2: Delhi’s Energy Minister, Ashish Sood, made a significant statement regarding the government’s order for a CAG audit of the state’s distribution companies (discoms). He emphasized that this formal directive represents a historic move towards transparency, accountability, and good governance in Delhi’s power sector. More importantly, he noted that it is a victory for every electricity consumer and honest taxpayer in the region.
Sood pointed out that after the privatization of the power sector, numerous financial decisions, special arrangements, and increasing liabilities went unchecked for years. He criticized the previous Aam Aadmi Party government for protecting the system instead of scrutinizing it. What they failed to accomplish in a decade, his government has initiated within just a few months.
He further stated that the people of Delhi have the right to know how the regulatory assets, amounting to nearly ₹38,000 crores, have continuously increased and who benefited from this, while the burden fell on the citizens. The CAG audit will bring all these facts to light.
The Energy Minister added that this audit is not merely an investigation of the previous government’s actions; it lays the foundation for extensive reforms in Delhi’s power sector. The real success will depend on the corrective measures, more effective regulation, and stronger accountability that will follow.
Sood assured that no honest taxpayer in Delhi will be forced to bear the costs of private interests, favoritism, or poor decisions. It is the government’s responsibility to safeguard every rupee of public money. He confirmed that the entire process has been conducted in accordance with the law and with complete transparency, and now expects full cooperation from all discoms.
He concluded by stating that with the blessings of the people of Delhi, the government is committed to creating a transparent, accountable, and public-interest-driven power sector.
