New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Authorities have intensified their investigation into a recent building collapse in South West Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. On Thursday, Shubham Tyagi, a fugitive implicated in the incident, surrendered at the Patiala House Court. The police had requested his custody for further questioning, and the court granted their request.
Reports indicate that Tyagi was leasing a floor from the building’s owner, Hariram Gupta, where an illegal paying guest (PG) operation was being run. Allegations suggest that the building was overcrowded and underwent construction without adhering to safety standards, which led to the tragic collapse. Tyagi had been on the run since the incident occurred.
During the court proceedings, police argued that a thorough investigation into the conspiracy and negligence surrounding the case was essential, warranting Tyagi’s interrogation. They sought a two-day police remand for him.
The Patiala House Court subsequently ordered that two individuals, PG operators Sudhanshu and Shubham Tyagi, be held in police custody for two days. Law enforcement plans to interrogate them together to ascertain the number of occupants in the building, the terms of the lease, and the disregard for safety regulations.
Additionally, the court adopted a stern stance towards two other defendants. Mahesh Gupta, the owner’s son, and labor contractor Sanoj were sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Mahesh Gupta is accused of being involved in the overall management of the building and the illegal constructions, while contractor Sanoj allegedly employed workers without proper blueprints or safety equipment.
The Satya Niketan area recently witnessed the collapse of an old building, trapping numerous students and young professionals. This locality, situated near Delhi University‘s South Campus, is home to a significant number of PG residents and coaching students. The issue of illegal PG accommodations and dilapidated buildings is gaining increasing attention. The Delhi Police have filed charges related to negligence, involuntary manslaughter, and illegal construction in connection with the incident.
