New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget, allocating significant funds to strengthen infrastructure in border areas. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), under the Defence Ministry, has been allocated ₹7,394 crore to carry out key projects in difficult terrains.
This budget provision will support the construction of tunnels, bridges, airstrips, and roads in remote border regions. These developments aim to enhance security along the borders while also promoting growth and tourism in these areas.
In addition, the government has increased healthcare funding for ex-servicemen and their families. The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) under the Defence Ministry has been allocated ₹12,100 crore, marking a 45 percent increase compared to last year.
Over the past five years, the ECHS budget has more than tripled, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving veteran welfare. Defence pensions have been allocated ₹1.71 lakh crore to ensure timely payments to over 34 lakh pensioners.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the budget, stating that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is rapidly progressing towards becoming a developed nation. He congratulated Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting a budget that transforms aspirations into achievements.
The Defence Minister emphasized that this youth-driven budget will strengthen the goal of a self-reliant and developed India. Inspired by three core duties, the budget aims to accelerate economic growth, meet public expectations, and ensure equal participation for all.
He added that the budget is designed to extend the benefits of development to all sections of society, with special focus on the poor, deprived, and vulnerable groups.
The Defence Ministry views the 2026-27 budget as a foundation to elevate India’s defence capabilities to new heights and to build a secure, self-reliant, and developed nation.
