Guwahati, April 3: Officials reported on Friday that the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has demonstrated its strong and ongoing commitment to passenger safety, security, and public service through the commendable performance of its Railway Protection Force (RPF) during the fiscal year 2025-26.
Kapingjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, stated that through stringent monitoring, a rapid response mechanism, and proactive enforcement strategies, the RPF has significantly enhanced security within railway premises, ensuring a safer and more secure travel environment for passengers across its jurisdiction.
During this fiscal year (2025–26), the RPF conducted targeted operations against theft, brokering, and other unauthorized activities, resulting in numerous cases being detected, arrests made, and illegal tickets seized. The force also took decisive action against stone-pelting incidents and removed encroachments on railway property, reflecting a strict ‘zero-tolerance’ approach to threats against safety and operational integrity.
In addition to its enforcement duties, the RPF continued its humanitarian initiatives by rescuing victims of human trafficking and providing assistance to those in distress, including women and children. The significant seizures of prohibited items and narcotics further highlight its vigilance and commitment to passenger safety and the overall integrity of railway operations.
As part of its efforts to enhance passenger safety through technology, the RPF of NFR made remarkable progress in recovering stolen mobile phones via the CEIR portal. During this period (2025–26), a total of 2,355 mobile phones were blocked, with 1,265 devices successfully traced and 291 phones recovered, of which 264 were returned to their rightful owners.
This initiative underscores the effective use of digital tools by the RPF to address passenger complaints and ensure timely recovery of lost or stolen property, thereby strengthening public trust in railway security systems.
Throughout this year, the RPF registered 219 cases related to the theft of passenger belongings, leading to the arrest of 285 individuals. Under its ongoing actions against unauthorized activities, 120 cases involving brokers were detected, resulting in 128 arrests. During these operations, a total of 757 tickets were seized, with an estimated value exceeding ₹2.3 million.
The force also addressed public safety concerns by taking action on 154 reported stone-pelting incidents, resulting in the apprehension of 116 individuals. There was a significant increase in efforts to secure railway property and prevent illegal encroachments; while 437 encroachments were removed in the previous fiscal year, 699 encroachments were cleared in 2025–26.
Under its humanitarian efforts, the RPF rescued 89 individuals from human trafficking, a notable increase from the 10 cases in 2024–25. Additionally, during this year, 1,125 individuals, including boys, girls, and women in distress (excluding human trafficking cases), were rescued; this figure surpasses the previous year’s total of 952.
During this period, the RPF also made several significant seizures, including prohibited items worth ₹12.9 million and narcotics valued at ₹55.29 million. This reflects the RPF’s continuous vigilance against illegal activities.
These achievements underscore the proactive approach, strong capabilities, and enhanced operational efficiency of the RPF under NFR, significantly contributing to safer rail operations and passenger security throughout the region.
