Islamabad: A brutal attack on a Christian man in Punjab province has drawn sharp criticism from a leading minority rights organisation, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Pakistan.
According to Voice of Pakistan Minority (VOPM), on January 21, Zahid Masih, a young Christian working as a bonded labourer and security guard in Bahawalpur, was attacked by his colleague Mohammad Ali Azhar. Azhar reportedly subjected Masih to continuous abusive and offensive remarks. When Masih protested, Azhar poured petrol on his face and set him on fire.
The rights group stated the attacker intended to burn Zahid Masih alive, but timely intervention by members of the Christian community saved his life. During the incident, Azhar allegedly made hateful comments against the Christian faith and asserted religious superiority.
VOPM reported that Zahid Masih sustained serious physical injuries and suffered deep psychological trauma. The attack has created fear and anger within Pakistan’s Christian community.
The organisation expressed concern over rising discrimination and violence against Christian labourers, who often face exploitation and abuse in labour-intensive sectors. Zahid Masih’s case exemplifies the precarious and vulnerable conditions of religious minorities in the country.
Several human rights groups have condemned the attack and called for strict legal measures to protect minority communities. Legal experts have also urged institutional reforms to ensure justice and curb religious intolerance.
VOPM added that Zahid Masih is still undergoing treatment and may require a lengthy recovery period for his mental health. The incident exposes gaps in existing legal safeguards and underscores the urgent need for broad social and cultural change against religious discrimination and intolerance.
The rights group emphasised that the attack is a stark reminder of the deep-rooted challenges faced by religious minorities in Pakistan, demanding comprehensive reforms to protect the fundamental rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith, including life, liberty, and religious freedom.
