BRICS Space Economy: A New Frontier for Global Development, Says Dr. Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, June 24: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated on Wednesday that the ‘BRICS Space Economy’ could emerge as a significant area for global development. He urged BRICS member nations to collaborate in unlocking new opportunities in innovation, investment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

Addressing the meeting of BRICS space agency heads in Bengaluru, Dr. Singh emphasized that BRICS countries possess the size, scientific capability, technological strength, and industrial resources necessary to become a major force in the rapidly growing global space economy.

He remarked, “The future space economy will not be shaped by countries working in isolation. It will take form through partnerships, shared innovation, and collective ambition. BRICS nations have the potential to become a strong pillar in this emerging global space framework.”

The minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to transforming shared goals with all BRICS partner countries into tangible outcomes. He noted that India will continue to enhance cooperation to maintain the space sector as an effective medium for development, resilience, innovation, sustainable growth, and international collaboration.

As part of India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, the two-day meeting organized by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) included heads and senior officials from space agencies of Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The meeting reviewed the progress of space cooperation among BRICS countries and discussed several critical topics. Key issues included space sustainability, missions free from space debris, strengthening the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation (RSSC), increasing participation from new BRICS member countries, and further discussions on the proposed BRICS Space Council.

Dr. Singh further stated that space technology has become one of the most influential forces for economic transformation and social progress today. He highlighted how space technology is enhancing sectors such as communication networks, navigation systems, disaster management, agriculture, healthcare, education, and environmental monitoring.

Mentioning the growing role of BRICS, the minister noted that this group represents a significant portion of the world’s population, economic capacity, scientific expertise, and technological resources. He asserted that deep cooperation among BRICS nations could create new opportunities for innovation, industrial partnerships, technology transfer, investment, and economic development, while also playing a crucial role in meeting the shared developmental needs of member countries.
