Greater Cleveland, Ohio, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : A Hindu temple in the Greater Cleveland area of Ohio was vandalized on Friday afternoon, resulting in shattered windows. The incident occurred while a priest and worshippers were inside the temple.
According to the Coalition of Hindus of North America (COHNA), the attack targeted the Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Temple in Vadatal Dham. The organization did not disclose whether anyone was injured during the incident, nor did it specify how many windows were damaged.
COHNA has urged Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and local officials to condemn the act and called for swift action from the police against those responsible. In a statement, the organization emphasized the need for community leaders to denounce such hate crimes.
No suspects have been identified, and there have been no arrests reported. Additionally, there is no evidence suggesting that the temple was targeted for religious reasons.
This attack coincides with the Hindu community in Ohio beginning its celebration of Hindu Heritage Month, with the upcoming Navratri festival also noted by COHNA. Hindu organizations in the United States traditionally observe October as Hindu Heritage Month.
COHNA has previously expressed concerns over rising hate and violence against Hindus in America, documenting multiple incidents involving temples. Among these was an incident in August 2022, where a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was damaged at the Shri Tulsi Temple in Queens, New York. Another incident occurred in December 2023, when offensive graffiti was found at the SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Newark, California.
While these events are part of a larger list of incidents, they do not necessarily indicate an annual increase in such attacks across the country. In September 2024, vandalism also occurred at BAPS temples in Melville, New York, and Sacramento, California. Further incidents in March 2025 involved hateful messages being scrawled at a BAPS temple in Chino Hills, California, following previous attacks on temples in New York and Sacramento.
The community continues to seek justice and safety in the wake of these troubling events.
