BRICS Nations to Focus on Agriculture in Indore for Five Days: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Bhopal, June 8: A five-day agricultural summit of BRICS nations is set to take place in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced that the meeting will primarily focus on small and marginal farmers.

Chouhan stated at a press conference that from June 9 to 13, Madhya Pradesh will become a global hub for agricultural diplomacy, hosting a significant meeting of the BRICS agricultural working group and the agriculture ministers of member countries. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this event aims to address global issues such as food security, sustainable agriculture, empowerment of small farmers, and agricultural innovation.

According to Chouhan, BRICS nations represent a powerful voice for developing countries, controlling nearly 42% of the world’s agricultural land and contributing over 42% to global agricultural production. Approximately 70% of the world’s 580 million farmers are small and marginal farmers residing in BRICS countries. Thus, the agricultural dialogue among these nations will impact food security not just for member countries but for the entire globe.

He emphasized that India’s vision under Prime Minister Modi is not limited to agricultural production but extends to food and nutrition security, increasing farmers’ income, job creation, and sustainable development.

The main focus of the meeting will be on small and marginal farmers, who face challenges such as small landholdings, limited resources, and access to markets. The summit will emphasize increasing production while reducing costs, enhancing access to agricultural loans, and improving market connectivity. Additionally, the role of women and youth in agriculture will be prioritized.

Chouhan highlighted the significant contribution of women in the agricultural workforce, while youth are quick to adopt new technologies and innovations. A special discussion on future food security through women and youth will take place on June 12.

The four main priorities of the BRICS agricultural working group include food security and nutrition, agricultural trade and cooperation, climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture, and innovation and research partnerships. Ensuring safe and nutritious food amidst a growing population and changing climate conditions is a major challenge. Increasing trade, investment, technology, and market access among countries is essential to address this.

Chouhan pointed out that climate change poses a serious threat to agriculture, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, droughts, and excessive rainfall affecting farmers. Therefore, there will be a strong emphasis on regenerative farming, climate-resilient agriculture, and the conservation of natural resources to ensure soil and environmental quality for the future.

He also identified food waste as a significant global issue, with approximately one billion tons of food wasted each year, leading to resource loss and being a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Discussions will focus on improving storage, transportation, and supply chain measures to combat this problem.
