Thiruvananthapuram, May 5: Under India’s current BRICS presidency, the second BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) meeting will commence on Wednesday in Thiruvananthapuram. This information was provided by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Tuesday.
The meeting will include representatives from BRICS nations who focus on labor, employment, and worker welfare issues. Participating countries include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates.
According to the ministry, this second EWG meeting will serve as a crucial in-person platform to advance discussions initiated during the first meeting and foster a better understanding of the priorities and goals established under India’s presidency.
The first employment working group meeting took place virtually in March, where discussions centered on four main topics. Key issues included promoting social security and formalizing the labor market, enhancing women’s participation in the workforce, employability, skill mapping and development, and leveraging digital technology for gig and platform workers as well as all workers.
The upcoming meeting will particularly focus on advancing these issues, especially strengthening social security systems and expediting the formalization of the labor market. Additionally, discussions will address collaboration on employment capacity and skill development.
The ministry also noted that several major international organizations will participate as knowledge partners in this meeting, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Social Security Association (ISSA), and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office. These organizations will provide technical suggestions based on their experiences and share global perspectives to enhance discussions on employment, worker welfare, social security, and future work-related issues.
The ministry expressed optimism that the active participation of BRICS nations and these knowledge partners will lead to concrete, forward-thinking, and beneficial outcomes in the fields of labor, employment, and worker welfare.
