Breast Cancer Awareness: Urgent Call for Prevention as Cases Surge Worldwide

New Delhi, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : Breast cancer has emerged as a significant health concern for women globally. Alarmingly, every minute, four women receive a breast cancer diagnosis, while one woman succumbs to the disease. These statistics highlight the urgent need for awareness and action, particularly as October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative aims to educate the public about the risks, prevention strategies, and the importance of early detection.

The United Nations recently took to social media platform X to promote awareness about breast cancer. This disease involves the rapid growth of abnormal cells in the breast, which can form tumors. Typically, it begins in the lobules or ducts that produce milk. If not detected and treated promptly, the cancer can spread to surrounding tissues, lymph nodes, and other organs, making it potentially life-threatening.

Fortunately, early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates. Therefore, it is crucial not to overlook changes in the body. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 2.4 million women worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, with approximately 694,000 fatalities attributed to the disease. Breast cancer affects women in nearly every country, and the risk increases with age, although younger women can also be diagnosed.

To mitigate the risk of breast cancer, the United Nations recommends adopting several healthy habits. One of the primary suggestions is to avoid smoking, as it poses various health risks and increases the likelihood of cancer and other serious illnesses. Additionally, abstaining from alcohol consumption is advised.

Engaging in regular physical activity—such as walking, yoga, cycling, or any exercise that suits one’s ability—can be beneficial for health. Consistent exercise helps manage weight and reduces the risk of breast cancer.

Women should also be vigilant for warning signs, such as new lumps in the breast, changes in breast size or skin, inverted nipples, or unusual discharge. While not all lumps are cancerous, it is essential to seek medical advice for any concerning changes. Ignoring these symptoms at any age can have serious consequences.
