Tehran, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : A fire erupted on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the third incident of its kind in recent weeks. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a stern warning to vessels navigating the area, stating that ships that turn off their navigation and identification systems will be considered enemies and face action.
According to reports from Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the tanker, carrying 750,000 barrels of crude oil, was involved in an explosion after colliding with a naval mine. The incident occurred when the vessel attempted to navigate an unauthorized route, despite prior warnings.
IRGC naval commander Ali Azmai emphasized that any ship in the Strait that disables its navigation and identification systems will be treated as a threat. This warning follows a previous incident where a supertanker was reportedly struck by an explosion while violating navigation rules, leading to a fire on board.
The IRGC stated that the tanker involved in Saturday’s incident had its navigation and GPS systems turned off while traversing a route already designated as high-risk. The IRGC has made it clear that any oil tanker disregarding Iranian regulations could face similar consequences.
In a related event just a day earlier, the IRGC targeted a large LPG carrier named “NV Sunshine,” which was attempting to pass through the southern part of the Strait via an illegal route.
Tensions in the region continue to escalate as the IRGC enforces strict navigation protocols in the strategically vital waterway.
