Tele-Mannas Provides Lifeline on World Mental Health Day with Over 4.7 Million Calls

New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is set to observe World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2026. This year’s global theme is “Lived Experience Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.” The government emphasizes its commitment to making mental health services accessible, affordable, inclusive, and person-centered.

In this context, the Tele-Mannas program has emerged as a critical pillar of the country’s mental health services. The toll-free helpline, 14416, provides free, confidential, and round-the-clock mental health support across India.

Since its launch on October 10, 2022, Tele-Mannas has received a staggering 4,775,644 calls as of October 2026. There are currently 53 Tele-Mannas cells operating in all 36 states and union territories.

Statistics reveal that a significant number of women are utilizing this service. Among the recorded 1,335,275 callers, 43.78 percent, or 584,587, are women, while 54.18 percent are men. This indicates that telephone counseling has made it easier for women to seek help.

The majority of calls come from young adults and working-age individuals aged 18 to 45, accounting for 73.2 percent of total callers. Many reach out regarding emotional distress, anxiety, stress, exam pressure, workplace issues, relationship challenges, and sleep disorders.

Tele-Mannas offers a multilingual service, allowing individuals to consult trained counselors from the comfort of their homes, without needing to visit a health center. This service is particularly beneficial for those in rural and remote areas where access to specialist doctors is limited. When necessary, callers are referred to specialists and additional services.

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the ministry is also promoting the “MANN” awareness initiative. This program aims to enhance community awareness, encourage prompt help-seeking, and eliminate stigma surrounding mental health. It will facilitate open discussions in schools, colleges, workplaces, and health centers.

The government has announced efforts to strengthen mental health services at the grassroots level. The district mental health program has been approved for 767 districts, providing outpatient services, counseling, medications, follow-ups, and referrals.

Additionally, mental health services have been integrated into over 183,000 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the country, where primary health teams offer initial assessments and support.

The health ministry urges individuals not to hesitate in seeking help. It stated, “Every conversation matters, and every voice deserves to be heard.” Anyone in need of assistance can call 14416 for free support.
