Brazilian President Lula Embarks on India Visit to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Rio de Janeiro, February 17: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva departed for India on Tuesday. He will participate in the second AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. Before his trip, President Lula stated that discussions will focus on new opportunities for collaboration between the two nations.

He wrote on the social media platform X, “We are heading to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the coming days, I will attend the summit on the impact of artificial intelligence and discuss new avenues for cooperation between Brazil and India. After this, we will travel to South Korea, where we will strengthen our relations at the invitation of President Lee Jae-myung.”

President Lula mentioned that a high-level business delegation will accompany him, aiming to deepen bilateral trade relations. He noted that in 2025, bilateral trade between India and Brazil surpassed $15 billion.

During this state visit, which runs from February 18 to 22, President Lula will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi on February 21. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders will review all aspects of their mutual relations. Prime Minister Modi will also host a luncheon in honor of the Brazilian President.

Discussions will cover regional and global issues, including cooperation on multilateral platforms, reforms in multilateral systems, global governance, and matters related to the ‘Global South.’

President Droupadi Murmu will also meet with President Lula and host a state banquet in his honor. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will also meet him.

Accompanying President Lula will be around 14 ministers and top CEOs from leading Brazilian companies. These ministers will hold meetings with their Indian counterparts, while the CEOs will participate in the Brazil-India Business Forum.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that this will be President Lula’s sixth visit to India. He first came in 2004 as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations and last visited in September 2023 for the G-20 summit. Prime Minister Modi also made a state visit to Brasília in July 2025, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brazil in 57 years.

Brazil and India have maintained a strategic partnership since 2006. Both countries share close ties based on democratic values, strong people-to-people connections, and growing cooperation in trade, defense, energy, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, rare earth elements, science and technology, digital public infrastructure (DPI), AI, and space.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, President Lula’s visit will further strengthen the bilateral strategic partnership and provide new directions for cooperation on regional and global platforms.
