New York, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Botic van de Zandschulp delivered a stunning performance at the 2026 US Open, overcoming a two-set deficit to defeat France’s Arthur Gea and advance to the quarterfinals. The match, which lasted 5 hours and 13 minutes, concluded with scores of 3-6, 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 7-6(6), 6-4, marking it as the fourth longest singles match in US Open history.
Arthur Gea, ranked 87th and playing in his first US Open main draw, initially took control of the match by winning the first set 6-3. He followed up with a commanding 7-0 victory in the second set, putting him in a strong position to reach the quarterfinals. However, van de Zandschulp mounted a remarkable comeback, winning three consecutive sets to clinch the match.
The third set was particularly thrilling, reaching a tiebreaker where Gea had a match point, just one point away from a historic win. Unfortunately for him, he mishit a crucial forehand volley and later missed a volley that seemed destined to go wide. Van de Zandschulp capitalized on these errors, winning the tiebreaker 9-7.
In the fourth set, Gea attempted to regain control and even served for the match at one point. However, van de Zandschulp prevailed in the tiebreak, winning 7-3. The fifth set saw the Dutch player take charge, ultimately winning 6-4 against the 21-year-old Gea.
At 30 years old, van de Zandschulp’s journey to the quarterfinals was particularly memorable, as he had previously reached the final eight in New York in 2021.
