Bollywood Dance Evolution Discussed on Indias Best Dancer, Featuring Alam Ara

Mumbai, June 2: The show ‘India’s Best Dancer’ has become a unique platform to celebrate the golden history of Indian cinema. Judges Javed Jaffrey, Terence Lewis, and host Harsh Limbachiya engaged in a discussion about the evolution of Bollywood dance, reflecting on its journey from classic films to modern choreography.

During the conversation, the first Indian talkie film, ‘Alam Ara’, was highlighted as a significant milestone in the history of Indian cinema. Harsh Limbachiya posed a question about which film first showcased dance in Bollywood.

He remarked, “Let me clarify that the initial glimpse of dance and performance was seen in ‘Alam Ara’. The artists of that era likely never imagined that dance would become such a prominent aspect of Indian cinema in the future. ‘Alam Ara’ featured Prithviraj Kapoor, and his great-granddaughter Karisma Kapoor would later become a defining figure in Bollywood dance.”

Javed Jaffrey took the opportunity to remember the legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor and praised his contributions. He stated, “Prithviraj Kapoor had a powerful screen presence and a very impactful personality. Following him, great artists like Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor continued this legacy. The Kapoor family infused a unique energy into Indian cinema that is still remembered today.”

Terence Lewis then discussed the changing landscape of Bollywood dance. He noted, “The level of dance in Hindi cinema gradually evolved, thanks to many trained artists. Actresses entered the film industry with classical dance training, including names like Vyjayanthimala, Hema Malini, and Sridevi. These artists elevated Bollywood dance with their technique and discipline, making it more impactful.”

Lewis added, “When Madhuri Dixit emerged, a new energy was introduced to Bollywood dance. Her expressions and dance style left a lasting impression on audiences. Following Madhuri, Karisma Kapoor also brought a unique cinematic flair to dance. Each generation has contributed something new to Bollywood dance, pushing it forward.”
