Imphal, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The body of Vikram Singh, a talented musician from Manipur, was returned to Imphal on September 9, following his tragic death in Delhi. The 54-year-old guitarist and music teacher was allegedly killed on September 7 after being assaulted by a group outside his apartment in Kilokari village.
Family members, friends, and fellow musicians gathered at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport to pay their respects as his remains arrived. Eyewitnesses reported that Singh had objected to noise created by delivery staff and restaurant workers, leading to the fatal encounter.
Emotional scenes unfolded at the airport, with many attendees visibly distraught. Singh’s brother, Chongtham Vivek, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating it affected not just their family but the entire music community in Manipur. He called for strict punishment for those responsible and urged authorities to expedite the investigation and legal proceedings.
“This is a very sad and painful moment for people across the state and the country,” Vivek remarked. He emphasized that his brother’s death marks a significant loss for the music industry.
Renowned singer Sadanand Hamom joined the call for justice, demanding the death penalty for those implicated in Singh’s alleged murder. He also raised concerns about racial discrimination faced by Northeast Indians, citing this incident as a distressing reminder of ongoing issues.
Hamom described Singh as a “friendly and grounded person,” lamenting the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death. He urged officials to take decisive action against those responsible, highlighting the urgent need to address racial discrimination in Delhi.
Multiple organizations, including the Manipur Students Association Delhi (MSAD) and the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC), condemned the murder, suggesting it may have been racially motivated. They have called for a thorough investigation into the underlying motives of the attack.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has requested his Delhi counterpart, Rekha Gupta, to expedite a high-level inquiry into the musician’s death and ensure strict legal action against the perpetrators.
