BJP Unveils Vision Document for Assam Assembly Elections 2026, Finance Minister Targets Congress

Guwahati, March 31: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched its vision document for the Assam Assembly elections on Tuesday in Guwahati. The event was attended by Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia, and other dignitaries. Chief Minister Sarma promised the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state and the creation of two lakh jobs.

Sarma stated, “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the central and state governments are working together. Assam has become an excellent example of how both can collaborate to transform a struggling state into one of the most advanced in the country.”

He emphasized, “The presence of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at our manifesto launch sends a clear message. It symbolizes that Assam’s development is a joint effort of both the state and central governments. We have reduced the poverty rate from 34% to just 14%.”

Sarma highlighted a few key achievements, stating, “Assam is a state where the impact of Prime Minister Modi’s double-engine government is clearly visible. We will implement UCC in Assam, excluding the Sixth Schedule and Scheduled Tribe areas. We will take strict measures against love jihad and aim to make Assam flood-free, allocating ₹18,000 crores in the first two years. We plan to establish one medical college, one university, and one engineering college in each district.”

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted, “Under the PM Awas Yojana, 20 lakh homes have been provided. The largest state-level direct benefit transfer scheme in India has been launched, benefiting 40 lakh families with monthly assistance of ₹1,250.”

Sitharaman added, “The first Vande Bharat Express in the Northeast now operates between Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri. Four airports, including Jorhat, Tezpur, Lilabari, and Rupsi, have been revived under the aviation scheme, which were left inactive by Congress. These enhancements improve connectivity for the Northeast and Assam. The world’s longest river cruise, MV Ganga Vilas, has also benefited Assam.”

She further stated, “We are creating an advanced and globally competitive ecosystem that attracts talented Assamese individuals from around the world to return and work with us.”

Sitharaman shared a personal anecdote about her visit to the OSAT facility in Jagiroad, where she observed clean rooms, precise equipment, and manufacturing aligned with global standards. She met Vaswati Sharma Barthakur, who returned from a successful career in Canada to seize opportunities in Assam.

The Finance Minister emphasized, “We are not only generating jobs for local youth but also fostering an ecosystem that encourages talented Assamese from abroad to return. Everything we do depends on the stability and peace in the state. Today, Assam is peaceful, demonstrating that lasting peace is achievable. This is our greatest achievement.”

Sitharaman criticized Congress, stating, “There is much to say, but during Congress’s rule in 2007 alone, there were 474 attacks resulting in 287 civilian deaths. For ten years, an average of 128 people were killed annually. However, since our government took office in 2016, the annual death toll has dropped to just 99. From 2019 to 2023-24, there have been no civilian deaths. This is the achievement of our government. Maintaining peace saves lives.”
