Kolkata, June 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially took control of the East Midnapore District Council in West Bengal on Monday. This district is the home turf of opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari.
This marks the first time the BJP has assumed leadership of the district council since the implementation of the three-tier panchayat system in West Bengal.
Local BJP leader and elected council member Bamdev Guchait has taken office as the new president of the East Midnapore District Council.
The previous council, controlled by the Trinamool Congress, was dissolved following the resignation of its president, Uttam Barik. Barik, a former MLA from Patashpur, had contested the recent assembly elections from the Chandipur seat. Following his resignation, vice president Suhasini Kar also stepped down, leading to the council’s dissolution.
The East Midnapore District Council comprises 70 seats. Previously, the Trinamool Congress held 56 seats while the BJP had 14, two of which became vacant due to the deaths of members.
During the general meeting held on Monday, Bamdev Guchait and Jayadev Midya were elected as president and vice president, respectively, with 64 members present. Soumendu Adhikari, the BJP MP from Kanthi and brother of CM Suvendu Adhikari, was also in attendance.
He stated, “From the center to the state, and from district councils to MPs and MLAs, everyone is now a BJP member. Together, we will ensure comprehensive development for the district and the state.”
