New Delhi, April 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharply criticized Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s remarks regarding the defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. The party asserted that women across the nation will “teach the opposition a lesson” for blocking this crucial legislation.
This response came a day after Priyanka Gandhi, a Congress MP from Wayanad, claimed that the unity of the opposition thwarted the central government’s “conspiracy” aimed at altering the country’s federal structure and undermining democracy.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
During a press conference at the All India Congress Committee office in New Delhi on Saturday, Priyanka Gandhi stated, “What happened yesterday was a significant victory for democracy. The government’s plot to change the federal structure and weaken democracy has been foiled. This is a victory for the Constitution, the country, and the unity of the opposition. This was evident on the faces of the ruling party leaders.”
In response to her comments, BJP National Spokesperson Pratul Shah Dev remarked, “Despite being a woman, Priyanka Gandhi participated in defeating a bill aimed at empowering women. Now she claims the opposition did this to ensure women’s rights? She should be ashamed. As a woman MP, and with her mother Sonia Gandhi having been the Congress president, the Congress played the role of a ‘ringmaster’ in defeating the Women’s Reservation Bill.”
He further stated that the people of this country “will not forgive Congress,” asserting that their “tears will erase this party from the nation.”
BJP National Executive Member Boddu Nag Lakshmi also criticized the Congress leader, saying, “Sonia Gandhi’s beloved daughter is now speaking about reservation after rejecting the bill intended for women’s reservation. The BJP has worked for the women of this country. The BJP is like a lotus that rises and blooms from the mud. No matter how much you speak against the BJP, it will have no effect. Elections are happening everywhere, and women will completely reject your statements on reservation.”
Joining the criticism of Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks, Janata Dal-United National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said, “Priyanka Gandhi should change her comments and admit that she succeeded in executing the conspiracy against women devised by Congress. This will come at a high cost. People have decided to teach these (opposition) parties a lesson, whether it be Congress, DMK, Trinamool, or Samajwadi Party. Women have decided to reject them everywhere.”
The bill, which aimed to provide 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament, failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority, leading to a sharp political confrontation between the ruling NDA and the opposition ‘India’ bloc.
Despite a full day of debate, the proposed law, which also aimed to increase the number of members in the house, could not achieve the constitutionally required two-thirds majority. It received 298 votes in favor and 230 against, falling short of the threshold needed for passage.
